The ADA and You

The SCIAVA quarterly newsletter now features a regular column by Michael Chenail, aka the ADA Pro. Dedicated to promoting the rights of individuals with disabilities, his column addresses the many concerns and issues we have regarding our civil liberties and our rights under the law. The ADA was designed to impact our lives in a positive manner, yet as an "Act" which differs from a statutory law, in that it is enforeced only by the people it affects, it is up to us to ensure that our rights are honored. Call (804) 389-2479 or write Michael at accessus@adahospitality.com with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your rights under the law.

Questions and Answers to the ADA

Barriers to employment, transportation, public accommodations, public services, and telecommunications have imposed staggering economic and social costs on American society and have undermined our well-intentioned efforts to educate, rehabilitate, and employ individuals with disabilities. By breaking down these barriers, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will enable society to benefit from the skills and talents of individuals with disabilities, will allow us all to gain from their increased purchasing power and ability to use it, and will lead to fuller, more productive lives for all Americans. The Americans with Disabilities Act gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.

The following pages, or links, contain questions and answers that provide an overview of the ADA's requirements for ensuring equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment in; state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation, and requiring the establishment of TDD/telephone relay services.
